Re-thinking education

It is only a few weeks to go before thousands of young people receive the news they have been waiting all summer for………Exam results! Prior to the release of the results education is a hot topic within the news. Most recently a former key figure in Labour under Tony Blair has called for a drastic shake up of the way children are taught and advises that the current nature of the exam system does not encourage children how to think. He stated that the criticism is aimed at Government and not at Schools.

It has been almost 10 years since I took my GCSE’s and I can honestly say I think it is a good way to test pupils at the end of their compulsory education. However I would say I did not necessarily understand all aspects of a certain subject, but managed to gain very good grades as I prepared well and revised thoroughly. Preparation and planning are essential in order to help get the best results possible. It is crucial to invest time and effort in to this process, which is sometimes difficult to do particularly if the topic is not one which is of interest.

Whilst I was at university I preferred the method of being graded for work throughout the year which then contributed to my final grade at the end of my course. I felt this was a better way to assess my knowledge and skills regarding the subject rather than an exam at the very end.

If the education system was to be overhauled with new methods, a lot of time and effort needs to be spent on getting it right as education is so important to a persons quality of life.
